Marvel vs Capcom 4? Puh-lease…

??????

Over the past weekend, rumors starting springing up through the stream monster community, accompanied with – or perhaps fueled by – an ominous, and rather awful-looking “4” which obviously meant Marvel vs Capcom 4 will be announced soon.  As extremely exciting as this sounds, I have my doubts this is even true.

First of all, according to this article from Shoryuken, that ominous 4 you see above was fan-created.  As far as I’ve been able to dig up, any and all rumors begin off the appearance of this image almost a week ago, but was revealed early Monday morning to be fake by its creator.  You can catch a link to that reveal in the Shoryuken article.  Then yesterday, Polygon’s article pops up about 12 hours later, attempting to legitimize the claims, but I guess we won’t find out until the Playstation Experience event set for this weekend.  You know, according to their mysterious “multiple sources”.  If by multiple sources, they mean the internet, then I guess anything is reliable.

That comes to my second thought; why is this coming from “multiple sources”, instead of “Marvel insiders” or “sources close to the project”?  You know, a source I can really chew on.  Capcom has needed a big win for quite some time, with the lackluster success of dmc, Asura’s Wrath, SFIV, UMVC3, and SFV looming over its head, and I’d bet Disney/Marvel would want to show up big at PSX with lots of hype in tow.  Why not drop a teaser of their own, rerelease a not-so-subtle patch for UMVC3 ahead of the event to draw up more hype, and give people a reason to dust off their last-gen machines before the event?  Maybe it’s beyond Capcom’s scope of initiative.  Maybe it’s wishful thinking.  Or maybe it’s because they don’t have the license to create a 4th title at all.

However, if it is true…

What’s this about nixing the X-Franchise???  That makes about as much sense as the X-Men family tree, which is to say it doesn’t.  The House that X built has about half of all the bad-ass female villains and heroines in the Marvel Universe, and eliminating the return of characters like Storm, Phoenix, and X-23 are gone, and we don’t even get to root for the possibility of other franchise favorites like Rogue, Marrow, Psylocke, and Spiral ro rise from the ranks of the ghost of MVC2 past.  Then here’s where I really get angry.  We eliminate Sentinel, and MANGO Sentinel, one of the most thrilling underdog’s in the series, and my favorite character, alongside Wolverine, Magneto, and Cyclops.  We get no chance for Gambit, and remember that piss poor excuse of why they didn’t add Iceman in MVC3?  Because he looked too similar to Silver Surfer, but then it turned out Silver Surfer wasn’t even an NPC in the game because they couldn’t create attacks for his surf board.  I don’t even want to think about all the new characters that haven’t even had a chance to shine: like Armor, Mystique, Pyro, Apocalypse, Emma, Magik… the list goes on.  Let’s not even think to muster about how awesome it would be to revive Cable from MVC2 and have him join ranks alongside Deadpool.  The thought of pineapple and pulse grenades is unfathomable, and it makes me completely giddy.

But hey, let’s get hype for Ant-Man.
