The fans demanded it. Fate arranged it. Miesha Tate will coach season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) opposite UFC Champion Ronda Rousey! After stopping Miesha Tate with knee strikes, Cat Zingano was slated to be Ronda Rousey’s next challenger as well as her rival coach on TUF. Unfortunately, Zingano suffered a knee injury during training, granting Tate the opportunity to take her spot. While it would have been nice to see Zingano challenge Rousey for the title, as far as TUF is concerned Miesha Tate is who many fans wanted to see due to the rivalry that already exists between the two of them. As is often the case in Mixed Martial Arts, one fighter’s hardship is another fighter’s opportunity. Ronda Rousey defeated Miesha Tate back in 2011 to earn the Strikeforce women’s bantamweight title prior to making the jump to the UFC. It was that fight which sold Dana White on women’s mixed martial arts after he had been adamant that women would never fight in the UFC.
Ronda Rousey was just as shocked as anyone when Miesha Tate unexpectedly stepped out during the first day of filming the reality series. Stunned, Ronda Rousey stormed out of the UFC training center, in search of UFC President Dana White, believing that Miesha Tate was there to replace her. Miesha Tate told Yahoo! Sports that it was rewarding to see Rousey get angry when she saw her. Tate explained that, “It was rewarding to see that…I was like, ‘Yay! This is getting good.’ I watched her go to her corner and her corner was up in arms. I was just sitting there in the doorway thinking, ‘This is awesome.’
Ronda Rousey also spoke to Yahoo! Sports explaining that, “This is what we really wanted all along… Everyone said an Ultimate Fighter between me and Miesha would be the best. We have a personal history with each other and this is a personal show. For some reason, me and Miesha are intertwined in fate like Ali and Frazier or something like that.”
Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate are tentatively scheduled to fight on PPV on December 28th, following season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter.
