My Thoughts, Solicited: April 2014 Solicitations – DC & Marvel

DCMarvel-logos

April showers may bring May flowers, but it also brings the new Batman Eternal weekly series! Also starting in April from DC is Justice League United, because hey, what’s another Justice League title right? Meanwhile, things look grim for Nightwing as it could be that he’s… dead?! A new creative team takes over Flash and we also say good-bye to some titles, with Superman Unchained being one of them. Looking at Marvel, things aren’t as grim, but there’s still bad news as Uatu the Watcher gets killed and gets his own event because of it with Original Sin. Peter Parker makes a triumphant and totally expected return as Iron Fist gets another kick at an ongoing solo series. Get it? Another… kick! More heroes get their own solo title and one recently back from the dead takes over another. April has got it all for you, folks!

Let’s begin with DC. And not just because they come first alphabetically.

Batman Eternal

BATMAN ETERNAL #1
Written by SCOTT SNYDER, JAMES TYNION IV, JOHN LAYMAN, RAY FAWKES and TIM SEELEY
Art and cover by JASON FABOK
Don’t dare miss the start of the Bat-story so big it’s going to take every week of the month to tell! A massive cast of Gotham City’s best (and worst) examines the relationship between Batman, his allies and his city. In this debut issue, Commissioner James Gordon is caught on the wrong side of the law!

BATMAN ETERNAL #2
Written by SCOTT SNYDER, JAMES TYNION IV, JOHN LAYMAN, RAY FAWKES and TIM SEELEY
Art and cover by JASON FABOK
A notorious Batman adversary appears for the first time in The New 52 continuity!

BATMAN ETERNAL #3
Written by SCOTT SNYDER, JAMES TYNION IV, JOHN LAYMAN, RAY FAWKES and TIM SEELEY
Art and cover by JASON FABOK
A gang war erupts in Gotham City, but the G.C.P.D. doesn’t plan to help Batman stop it. Plus: The return of a fan-favorite Batman supporting character: Stephanie Brown!

BATMAN ETERNAL #4
Written by SCOTT SNYDER, JAMES TYNION IV, JOHN LAYMAN, RAY FAWKES and TIM SEELEY
Art by DUSTIN NGUYEN
Cover by JASON FABOK
Batman battles Batgirl as Jim Gordon’s troubles take a turn for the worse!

My thoughts: The story for this very much intrigues me. Now, I don’t know anything about Stephanie Brown, but I do know that fans have been clamoring for her to appear again. I like where this seems to be going and hopefully the weekly schedule doesn’t hinder anything. A project like this can be daunting, so I really hope it works out.

JusticeLeagueUnited

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #0
Written by JEFF LEMIRE
Art and cover by MIKE McKONE
Top comics writer Jeff Lemire teams with superstar artist Mike McKone for the all-new monthly series JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED, starring the new team of powerful heroes Earth calls Justice League Canada!
In the aftermath of FOREVER EVIL, Adam Strange is caught up in an adventure across the far reaches of the cosmos that will unite an unexpected team of heroes including Supergirl, Hawkman, Green Arrow, Stargirl, Martian Manhunter and Animal Man – but if they’re on the team, who exactly is Canadian? Plus: Don’t miss the debut of a new Canadian hero who will have a huge effect on the group!

My thoughts: It’s been a very long while since I’ve read any Justice League title. This makes it what – the 4th one or so? And it’ll be a team calling themselves Justice League Canada because there are wild moose on the loose? Someone ran out of syrup? Ok, I joke of course. It is good to have comics take place in other areas of the world besides the same old ones in the U.S. Even if it’s Canada (sorry, last one, I promise). The solicitation does make a good point, though, that if the heroes listed are who makes the team, who is the Canadian on the Canadian team? Not that weird or surprising. The X-Men have had non-mutants as members before.

Nightwing

NIGHTWING #30
Written by JAMES TYNION IV
Art by MEGHAN HETRICK
Cover by EDDY BARROWS
FINAL ISSUE
The Bat Family is forced to face the brutal aftermath of FOREVER EVIL, but after everything they’ve been through, can they stand together?

My thoughts: Nightwing series is ending. It’s being teased Nightwing himself is being ended (re: getting killed). Say it ain’t so, Joe! Nightwing’s always been my favorite of the Robins and in the Bat-world. It’s going to be quite a ride to see how this book ends and what happens of Dick Grayson.

Flash

THE FLASH #30
Written by ROBERT VENDITTI and VAN JENSEN
Art and cover by BRETT BOOTH and NORM RAPMUND
An all-new creative team makes its debut to show the deadly consequences of The Flash’s speed powers. During the traumatic events of FOREVER EVIL, Central City suffered the worst that the Crime Syndicate could dish out. Now The Flash has returned to make things right, but there are limits to what even the Fastest Man Alive can do!

My thoughts: Ahhh, Flash. The one book where I can look forward to having a great time reading each month. The new creative team come in with what sounds like a good story to come. It’s always great to look at what the flaws of superheroes are and how that affects how they do their superheroing.

 SupermanUnchained

SUPERMAN UNCHAINED #9
Written by SCOTT SNYDER
Art and wraparound cover by JIM LEE and SCOTT WILLIAMS
Backup story art by DUSTIN NGUYEN
FINAL ISSUE
This is it – the extraordinary finale of Scott Snyder and Jim Lee’s Superman saga, surrounded by an epic wraparound cover! It’s a battle in the sun as Superman and Wraith accept their destinies…and Lex Luthor pulls the trigger on his ultimate weapon!

My thoughts: So with this series ending, does it mean that Superman will be…. chained? What? Terrible puns are my thing. Wanna fight ‘bout it? Anyways – a battle in the sun sounds kind of hot (don’t judge me) and awesome. It’s like a fight for the ages with Superman being one of the fighters. And on top of that, Lex makes things worse. How will Superman save the day this time?

Now we turn the metaphorical page unto Marvel.

OriginalSin

ORIGINAL SIN #0
MARK WAID (W) • JIM CHEUNG (A/C)
IT’S THE PROLOGUE TO THE BIGGEST MARVEL SERIES OF THE SUMMER!
WHO IS THE WATCHER? That’s what Nova is wondering after his latest brush with the moon-dwelling enigma he’s encountered before! But what he discovers will have a profound effect on the young hero, as well as priming the pump for the most cataclysmic event in Marvel history! WHAT DID HE SEE?

My thoughts: Mark Waid writes the prologue for the event that will be written by Jason Aaron. If anyone read the story from the very first “Marvel Point One” issue, then it’s no surprise that Nova was going to be involved in this. After appearing in other events, foreshadowing terrible events to come, it’s really about time Uatu gets his own. Sadly it’s about him dying, but you give and take what you can, right? It seems logical to guess that whatever it is that Nova sees is what will lead to the Watcher’s death, if not that itself.

Amazing Spider-Man

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1
Dan Slott (W) • Humberto Ramos (A/C)
The Greatest Super Hero of All Time RETURNS!
The world may have changed since Spidey’s been gone, but so has Peter Parker. This is a man with a second chance at life, and he’s not wasting a moment of it. Same Parker Luck, new Parker attitude. Putting the “friendly” back in the neighborhood, the “hero” back into “super hero,” and the “amazing” back into “Spider-Man!” Also returning: The recharged and reenergized ELECTRO!

My thoughts: I am so, so, SOOO ecstatic to have Peter Parker back as Spider-Man. Everyone knew this was inevitable (mostly due to the Amazing Spider-Man 2 film), but it’s still great that we’ll have good ol’ Petey back. Now, I never really hated the idea of Otto taking over Peter’s body, but I just felt that wasn’t a story I was interested in reading. I feel there was a better way of doing something similar with Peter still around, but that’s another case altogether.

IronFist

Iron Fist: Living Weapon #1
KAARE ANDREWS (W)
KAARE ANDREWS (A/C)
High above the city, in a multi-million dollar penthouse, Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist, “The Living Weapon,” is haunted by the consequences of choosing death over life. A message from Iron Fist’s mystical homeland of K’un-Lun brings Danny back to his blood soaked origin of betrayal and vengeance! Revenge is a weapon that cuts both ways…. Will Danny survive the bloodletting? A one-of-a-kind kung fu action epic directed by the inimitable Kaare Andrews!

My thoughts: I’ve always enjoyed the character of Danny Rand/Iron Fist and have read and liked some of his solo book outings over the years. Kaaree Andrews is a fantastical writer and artist, so the combination of these two will make for a great series. Especially if Andrews can keep up doing the covers like movie posters. I say that a lot to people, because it works with Iron Fist. Like a classic kung-fu movie. WAAA-TAAAH!

Nightcrawler

NIGHTCRAWLER #1
CHRIS CLAREMONT (W) • TODD NAUCK (A)
Cover by CHRIS SAMNEE
NIGHTCRAWLER IS BACK!
Newly-returned from the afterlife, veteran X-Man Kurt Wagner finds himself in a world that’s a far cry from the one he left: Professor Xavier is dead, Cyclops is on the run, and the X-Men are divided. But determined not to let his new lease on life go to waste, Nightcrawler hits the road alongside Wolverine, eager to right some wrongs and safeguard the future mutantkind…and he’s going to do it by the means he loves most: swashbuckling, lady-charming and—of course—BAMFing!

My thoughts: Barely back from the dead and the famous blue elf already gets a new solo book. And although the title says Nightcrawler, it’s actually X-Men: Legacy. Kurt takes the reigns from Legion who had the focus on the volume before. I’m interested to see which Wolverine Kurt rides with in this arc (I’m assuming it’s just the first arc). I say that because is it the Wolverine before he leaves the school or the Wolverine that has found a new batch of “friends” in his new what-looks-like villainous days? Either way, it’ll make for great story material with Kurt’s character and where he just came from.

ANDoop

All-New DOOP #1 (of 5)
Peter Milligan (W)
INTERIOR ART BY DAVID LAFUENTE WITH LAURA ALLRED (A)
Cover by Michael Allred
Living in the margins of the X-Men, Doop has freaked out X-Men and readers alike. However, when he gets deeply involved in X-Men business (and in the personal life of Kitty Pryde!), Doop will be thrust into the spotlight. This adventure will prove that Doop is, in fact, the most powerful X-Man! Written by co-creator Peter Milligan (X-FORCE), covers by co-creator Mike Allred (X-FORCE, FF) and innovative interior art by David Lafuente (AVENGERS, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN)!

My thoughts: For anyone who read Wolverine and the X-Men #17, we all know how freaking awesome that issue was, which was all about Doop. Doop secretly makes sure that no threats come to the school, the ones the X-Men seem to not be able to take care of somehow. The green floating blob (has anyone made a Slimer joke yet?) has become such a fan favorite, and mostly from just being a background character in WATX. It’s the small things that make you smile and laugh. And now he’s getting a mini series from the guy who created him. I can’t wait to see what hi-jinks and shenanigans Doop will get to because I’m already loving it.
