It’s time to close out the year with some new additions, some good-byes and a couple monkeys or two. With another movie getting a continuation in comic book form, (and the second for a movie with Kurt Russell) and scarecrows and mummies fighting about and what not, this is going to be one crazy December. Heroes that were villainous and villains that were heroic… this month’s got it all. Continue on to see what the end of the year holds and what you can expect moving on forward.
ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK #1
Author: Christopher Sebela
Artist: Diego Barreto
The crime rate in the United States has risen 400 percent. After humiliating the President in front of the world and destroying America’s one chance to end World War III, Snake Plissken has become America’s Most Wanted man in a land of criminals and the insane. Everyone wants Snake dead. Luckily, Snake knows the feeling all too well. War hero. Outlaw. Renegade. Snake’s back!
Company: Boom! Studios
My thoughts: Snake Plissken is back! Taking place right after the movie ends (and before Escape from L.A.), rejoin the guy behind the inspiration for Hideo Kojima’s Solid Snake character for more awesome action packed stories! This an ongoing, folks! If you loved the movie, you have to give this a shot. Heh heh. “Shot”…
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. #1 (of 5)
Mike Mignola (W/Sketch variant), John Arcudi (W), Alex Maleev (A/Cover), and Dave Stewart (C)
A bizarre series of murders and rumors of something worse lead Professor Bruttenholm to send a young Hellboy to a Brazilian village on his first mission. Hellboy and a small group of agents uncover something terrible in the shadows of a sixteenth-century Portuguese fortress . . .
Company: Dark Horse
My thoughts: A new mini-series telling the story of Hellboy’s first mission, it’s another edition to the great pantheon of tales for Mignola’s red-colored man. Plus Alex Maleev on art and cover! His art style definitely fits the realm of Hellboy stories. Match made in Hell. Boy.
Itty Bitty Comics: The Mask #2
Art Baltazar (W/A) and Franco (W/A)
When Herman brings the mask in to his zookeeping job, he never expects the animals to be curious about it too! Now strange things are happening at the zoo! Is that an elephant dancing the mambo? What’s up with that well-dressed giraffe? Find out when animals unleash their wild side!
• From the guys who brought you Tiny Titans, Aw Yeah! Comics, and the Eisner-winning Itty Bitty Hellboy!
• All-ages mayhem from Art Baltazar and Franco!
Company: Dark Horse
My Thoughts: You loved Tiny Titans. You loved Itty Bitty Hellboy. Now there’s Itty Bitty Mask! The first issue to the series is out this month and on sale! Baltazar and Franco bring us more awesomely cuteness to another property and what better one to continue their special brand than with a character that fits the story and art style they work with? Awww yeah!!
SECRET SIX #1
Written by GAIL SIMONE
Art by KEN LASHLEY
Cover by DALE EAGLESHAM
Gail Simone is back with the NEW 52 debut of the fan-favorite team – THE SECRET SIX! Six strangers are brought together under mysterious circumstances for an explosive first issue that will leave everyone asking, “What is the Secret?”
Company: DC Comics
My Thoughts: I’ve never read Secret Six before, but I’ve heard how popular it was in its previous run, most specially thanks to the writer, Gail Simone. And now she’ll be writing the relaunch of the series, although the team’s entire roster hasn’t been revealed. It’s still being kept a… secret. What? Couldn’t help myself, it was right there! Gail is a very popular and beloved writer and I definitely will be adding this to my list to check it out.
THE MULTIVERSITY: THUNDERWORLD #1
Written by GRANT MORRISON
Art and cover by CAMERON STEWART
The fifth chapter of the greatest adventure in DC Comics history is here!
Acclaimed for their collaborations on BATMAN AND ROBIN, SEAGUY and SEVEN SOLDIERS OF VICTORY: THE MANHATTAN GUARDIAN, superstar writer Grant Morrison and renowned artist Cameron Stewart deliver some magic to THE MULTIVERSITY with a breathtaking journey to Earth-5 – A.K.A. Thunderworld!
With a single word, Billy Batson transforms from boy reporter for Whiz Media into the world’s Mightiest Mortal – Captain Marvel! Along with the other members of the Marvel Family, Captain Marvel battles dastardly villains like Mr. Mind and the Monster Society of Evil! But now, his greatest foe has attacked the Rock of Eternity – the source of the Marvel Family’s power – and it could mean the end of reality as we know it! What impossible villains are Sivana teaming up with who could spell doom for the Multiverse? From where did Sivana’s children get their newfound super powers? And what does the appearance of one mysterious comic book mean for the heroes of Thunderworld?
Find out all that and more in this exciting issue that acts as chapter five of THE MULTIVERSITY.
Company: DC Comics
My Thoughts: SHAZAM! One of the great DC heroes (who in the new 52 was given a… attitude adjustment…) can be seen and read in a classic way with this issue of Multiversity, Grant Morrison’s epic tale of the DC Multiverse. The first couple issues have been great so far and have been just a blast overall. Great storytelling, phenomenal art attached… what else could you ask for? I just with it wasn’t only 9 issues. Would love for Grant to keep exploring the multiverse.
Written by SCOTT SNYDER
Backup story written by SCOTT SNYDER and JAMES TYNION IV
Art by GREG CAPULLO and DANNY MIKI
Cover by GREG CAPULLO
The ultra top-secret Batman arc known only as “Endgame,” continues – it’s a story arc so steeped in mystery, all we can tell you is the title!
Company: DC Comics
My thoughts: It’s not a secret anymore. ENDGAME is the return of the Joker. He’s back and still mad at Batman over the events of DEATH OF A FAMILY. And because this is the Joker, it means he’s got a master plan to master them all! He’s even used the Justice League against the caped crusader! On top of it all, Scott Snyder has said this is the last time he’s going to be writing the Joker. With a statement like that, it can only mean he’s written an epic arc as his sendoff for the prince of crime.
STORY: JOHN ARCUDI
ART / COVER: JAMES HARREN
Okay, so a scarecrow walks into a bar…and proceeds to wreak havoc across two worlds! After a long absence, Rathraq, Scarecrow Warrior God, is back—and very unhappy. Bad news for his old enemies, yes, but worse news for everybody else! JOHN ARCUDI and JAMES HARREN bring you a modern day action/adventure fantasy thriller where rundown dive bars, undead kitty cats, psycho skinheads, and giant mummies all play a part. It’s Louis C.K. meets Robert E. Howard in a David Fincher universe.
My thoughts: If the description of the story doesn’t hook you in, then the last line has to! Louis C.K. meets Robert E. Howard in a David Fincher universe? That’s so crazy sounding enough to hook you in! At least it’s enough for me! The story sounds very intriguing. Scarecrows and mummies, psycho skinheads (are there any other kind?) in dive bars… fights are going to break out and so are wallets. To buy the book, that is. Maybe in the series for money stealing, too. Why not?
AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #9 (OF 9)
RICK REMENDER (W) • JIM CHEUNG (A)
Cover by JIM CHEUNG
ACT III: NEW WORLD DISORDER
• Who will live? Who will die? Who will remain inverted? A shocking climax that promises to crack the Marvel Universe to its very core!
• An old foe must claim the mantle of his greatest enemy to save the lives of all he cares for!
• An X-Man’s horrifying fate! An Avenger’s appalling choice! If you read only one comic this century – This is it!
My Thoughts: AXIS comes to its conclusion this month after some very crazy, bizarre on-goings thanks to the inversion spell that was casted, causing the AXIS. It’s great to see Marvel’s classic hype style return with the who will live/die questions. An old Marvel staple. It’s going to be interesting to see the outcome of this event and how the inversion affects everyone — not just themselves, but relationships between one character and the next.
INHUMAN #9 & 10
CHARLES SOULE (W) • RYAN STEGMAN (A/C)
• Medusa’s inversion in AXIS makes her a very different ruler of Attilan!
• What is the Ennilux Corporation?
My Thoughts: Soule has been knocking it out of the park with Inhumans. Well, he pretty much knocks it out of every park with all his books, but that’s not important right now. The Inhumans (and NuHumans) have been trouble lately (read the series to find out! It’s awesome! Did I mention Soule is doing great with this?) and now an inverted Medusa will definitely not make their situation any better. The new additions to the race have been very… let’s say marvelous. Inferno has already taken the favorite spot for me. The number one thing that pushes this book to greatness is the coloring as well. Beautiful. Again: read this book!
MARK WAID (W) • CARLOS PACHECO (A)
Cover by JULIAN TOTINO TEDESCO
• High-tech weapons. High-stakes missions. High-octane adventure! For the men and women of S.H.I.E.L.D., it’s just another day in the field!

My Thoughts: Marvel Team-Up is back! I know that’s not what the series is called, but read the solicitation and you’ll see that this is basically Marvel Team-Up in a whole new fashion. It’s going to be be S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, with the team from the ABC show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. teaming up with everyone from the Marvel (comic) universe! And at long last Fitz gets his helper monkey he always wanted. Monkeys make everything better!
