Little late than never never really hurt anyone. Well, unless you’re Peter Parker with the famous “Parker Luck”. That aside, last month the solicitations for January 2014 were released and this being the second of two part special where we go over the top books highlighted for both DC and Marvel, it’s a special Top 5 for each. No worries, back to normal soon!
Starting up, DC!
FOREVER EVIL #5
Written by GEOFF JOHNS
Art and cover by DAVID FINCH and RICHARD FRIEND
With everything to lose, Lex Luthor and his Injustice League raid the stronghold of the Crime Syndicate with consequences so devastating, the DC Universe will never be the same!
My thoughts: Forever Evil mini-series inches closer to its conclusion. Here we see claim already that the DC Universe will be forever changed. If we had a nickel every time a comic solicitation said that, we’d be richer than Bill Gates. Still it’s tough to really believe that. By the way things are working within the DC world, will other comics really feel the aftermath? We’ll we see the entire comic line share the effects of what comes out of this or will be contained? If this was Marvel, we’d know we would see other books being affected (if even just for a year or so). Here… I don’t know…
FOREVER EVIL: ROGUES REBELLION #4
Written by BRIAN BUCCELLATO
Art by SCOTT HEPBURN
Cover by DECLAN SHALVEY
The Rogues just can’t catch a break! On the run from the Crime Syndicate and the Secret Society, the Rogues are forced into a showdown with an army of escapees from Arkham Asylum!
My thoughts: The Rogues have been pretty much front and center since the New 52 started. And now the group versus some of Batman’s greatest enemies? This I must read. Especially with Mr. Freeze being involved. This cover y Declan is pretty damns sweet, too. If DC was smart (hold your laughter and insults) this would be a poster as well.
THE FLASH #27
Written by BRIAN BUCCELLATO
Art by PATRICK ZIRCHER
Cover by PASQUAL FERRY
The Flash faces a mystical serial killer who might be responsible for his mother’s murder!
My thoughts: Brian Buccellato is back to writing The Flash, but this time solo. Flash’s mother’s death has always been a touchy subject for him, so reading this one-line solicitation I’m already expecting a lot of, if not some, character development to happen. We shall see. Brian’s done good before, even if it was with a partner, so I have some hope.
BATMAN/SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1
Written by GREG PAK
Art by JAE LEE, ED BENES and others
Cover by ED BENES
It’s the first meeting of Supergirl and Red Hood, Steel and Supergirl and more as the competing Batman and Superman families must battle for the control of the missing Mongul’s fortress! And at the heart of it, Batman and Superman deal with their grief over their fallen comrades.
My thoughts: It’s the first annual for the new Batman/Superman series. For some reason, I’m expecting high stakes for this one, not really sure why. Maybe because of all the parties involved and how they’re all heavy hitters? And with a scene (or scenes) of Batman and Superman grieving, I hope that’s written well because something like that with those two guys can go a long way.
DETECTIVE COMICS #27
Written by JOHN LAYMAN, SCOTT SNYDER, PAUL DINI, BRAD MELTZER, GREGG HURWITZ and PETER J. TOMASI
Art by JASON FABOK, NEAL ADAMS, DUSTIN NGUYEN, GUILLEM MARCH, FRANK MILLER and others
Cover by GREG CAPULLO
DC Entertainment presents this mega-sized issue featuring an all-star roster of Batman creators past and present! Don’t miss a modern-day retelling of The Dark Knight’s origin by the incredible team of writer Brad Meltzer and artist Bryan Hitch! Plus, all-new stories by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy, Peter J. Tomasi and Guillem March, Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen, Gregg Hurwitz and Neal Adams, new art by legendary Batman writer/artist Frank Miller and more! Also in this issue, John Layman and Jason Fabok kick off the new storyline “GOTHTOPIA”! It’s a bright, shiny, happy place where dreams come true…as long as you don’t look at things too closely.
My thoughts: It’s a special issue of Detective Comics, as you can see by all the creators that are involved. Issues like these are great (when they’re done once in a long, long time) as getting lots of stories for your money’s worth. And that’s most especially true whenever you see Paul Dini attached. This should be a lot of fun to read, hopefully. You know- as long as it wasn’t messed by editorial. Ooff, too soon?
And now for Marvel!
MATT FRACTION (W) • JOE MADUREIRA (A/C)
“After the Fall”
After the fall of the Inhuman City Attilan and the explosion of the Terrigen Bomb, thousands of people across the globe with no connection to the strange super race have transformed into Inhumans! The transformations have given them powers that are dangerous and terrifying, making them targets. With Inhuman king Black Bolt believed dead, is there anyone for these new Inhumans to turn to?
My thoughts: The new Inhuman series is one people definitely need to keep an eye out for. Whether you’ll pick it up and read it or not, it should be on your radar. The Inhumans are going to be in the forefront of the Marvel Universe for the months (and maybe years) to come. The next big Marvel event is even rumored to be about them. They’re going to be major players on the same level as the X-Men or the Avengers, and that is a big scale.
ALL-NEW INVADERS #1
JAMES ROBINSON (W) • STEVE PUGH (A)
Cover by MUKESH SINGH
“GODS AND SOLDIERS” PART ONE
• Eisner Award winner James Robinson (STARMAN, EARTH 2) returns to MARVEL, uniting with Steve Pugh (ANIMAL MAN, HOTWIRE, GEN-X) to create a unique, modern day take on the INVADERS.
• The KREE EMPIRE intends to conquer the universe using a weapon that will grant them an army of NORSE GODS.
• It falls to four heroes united by their past—CAPTAIN AMERICA, NAMOR, THE ORIGINAL HUMAN TORCH and the WINTER SOLDIER—who must now face the future and wage war against the Kree to save Earth.
My thoughts: Another new book for Marvel NOW! wave 2 and it’s the return of the Invaders. One thing I am looking forward about this book is having the original Human Torch appearing again. I don’t know when the last time he appeared in the Marvel Universe was, but it’s definitely cool to have him around again.
ALL-NEW X-MEN #22.NOW
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W)
STUART IMMONEN (A/C)
“The Trial of Jean Grey”
The arrival of the original X-Men in the present sent shockwaves through the Marvel Universe, but we’ve only seen the effects on Earth. When alien races learn that Jean Grey, host of the destructive Phoenix Force, is back on earth, they do something about it. Now it’s up to the rest of the All-New X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy to save Jean Grey from twisted intergalactic justice! Don’t miss two of Marvel’s biggest franchises crossing over for the first time!
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #11.NOW
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) • SARA PICHELLI (A/C)
The Guardians of the Galaxy get a reminder of Earth when they cross paths with the All-New X-Men during the TRIAL OF JEAN GREY! When an alien race discovers that the original Jean Grey is back on Earth, they decide to hold her accountable for the acts of the Dark Phoenix, and it’s up to the Guardians to help the X-Men save her. You won’t want to miss the first encounter between two of the biggest franchises in the Marvel U!
My thoughts: I am counting these two as one group because of the crossover they’ll be doing together. The story that Bendis promised us since All-New X-Men was revealed with Guardians of the Galaxy is finally happening and what a moment it is, too. Not too long after Battle of the Atom ends and the original five X-Men are still feeling the effects, they’re thrusted into this, where Jean Grey will be tried for crimes her future (dead) self has committed as host of the Phoenix. This may not be a “big Marvel event” but it sure has that kind of scale and structure to it. This is something not to be missed. What happens after this surely will be felt in a lot of places.
BLACK WIDOW #1
NATHAN EDMONDSON (W) • PHIL NOTO (A/C)
“The Finely Woven Thread”
You’ve seen Black Widow as an Avenger and even an Agent of Shield. But on her own time she searches for atonement for her past as a KGB assassin—in ways of which those teams just wouldn’t approve. From the darkest corners of the Marvel Universe, Nathan Edmonson (Who is Jake Ellis?) and Phil Noto (Thunderbolts, X-23) bring you a new ongoing series as gorgeous and mysterious as Nastasha Romanov herself!
My thoughts: Black Widow is a character that I’ve never really kept up with. Nothing against her, she’s just never been one I made sure to read about. That said, I have read great stories that involved her and were about her. What helps is not just a great story, but great art to go along with the story. The last for me was the mini series Bill Sienkiewicz drew. And now, another amazing artist, Phil Noto, is drawing her in this new ongoing. That I surely cannot miss.
ALL-NEW X-FACTOR #1 & 2
PETER DAVID (W) CARMINE DI GIANDOMENICO (A)
CoverS by JARED FLETCHER
“NOT BRAND X” Parts 1 & 2
X-FACTOR IS BACK…LIKE NEVER BEFORE! Serval Industries, one of the world’s most trusted names in electronics and leader in cutting-edge internet and weapons technology, has just unveiled their newest contribution to society…the All-New X-Factor. Led by mutant mistress of magnetism, Polaris, the team uses its corporate backing for the betterment of society. With her half-brother Quicksilver, notorious thief, Gambit, and more by her side, can Polaris trust that her corporate masters really have good intentions?
My thoughts: Fans were crushed to find out that X-Factor was ending with issue #262. And alas, X-Factor returns! With Peter David still writing! The only difference- the team seen in the previous volume will not be involved (not for a long while, according to David). Instead, there’s a brand new team that includes Gambit. I didn’t really keep up with X-Factor before (trade-waiting has its draw backs), but I plan to look into this new volume and hope to have a great time reading as fans did before.
Now, in case you’re thinking, “Whoa! What about Miracle Man? That’s the biggest news from Marvel in January!” And hey, I totally agree! That’s why it’ll get its own spotlight in a later edition of The Comic Bubble! So make sure to keep a look out! Until next time, fellow comic bookians!
