My Thoughts, Solicited returns for the new year! And what a way to start 2015 with what’s in store this month! An old friend comes back to Marvel after over two decades away while Marvel also prepares their first weekly ongoing series! DC inches closer to Convergence, with what possibly could be another universe reboot (as far as rumors go) and Spawn hits a landmark anniversary issue! All that and more, so look on ahead and see what’s what!
FEATHERS #1 (of 6)
Author: Jorge Corona
Artist: Jorge Corona
Cover: Jorge Corona
A recluse boy born covered in feathers must help his first-ever friend, a young girl named Bianca, as she tries to return to her home beyond the slums of the Maze. They must dodge street gangs and child-snatchers along the way, and perhaps together will learn the secrets to his mysterious past.
Company: Boom! Studios
My Thoughts: I’ve been getting into more and more of what Boom Studios has been publishing as it all sounds and looks intriguing and fun. After reading them, they have been. Every one I’ve checked out. And so I see no difference with this title as the art definitely captures my attention and the synopsis reels me in. The only real “downside” from what I’ve enjoyed is that the books have been mini-series and I wish they were ongoings to keep on loving them longer.
THE WOODS #9
Author: James Tynion IV
Artist: Michael Dialynas
Cover Artist: Michael Dialynas
New story arc! Having barely escaped their confrontation with the swarm, the hunters have led Adrian, Karen, Calder and company. to their breathtaking home base. But just when they think they may have found answers to what brought them to this alien world, a horror from the teens’ past rears its ugly head…
Company: Boom! Studios
My Thoughts: We know there’s an end-sight to this series. In case you don’t, the book is planned all the way to #36, where it will end. Now with #9, a new arc is starting and if you have not jumped on this book yet, you better do so as soon as possible. Having a high school, both student body and staff, transported to a mysterious woods of some unknown alien world and having them trying to survive it is greatness. The flashbacks have done wonders to flesh out the characters while in the present developing them further. A must-read for sure.
THE FLASH #38
Written by ROBERT VENDITTI and VAN JENSEN
Art and cover by BRETT BOOTH and NORM RAPMUND
The all-new, all-murderous Flash is posing as Barry Allen while the real Scarlet Speedster is trapped in the Speed Force!
My Thoughts: Ever since the first issue started with the future Flash coming back in time to present-day Barry Allen’s time, the series hasn’t really been an arc-by-arc basis, but really one overall story. I don’t mean to make that sound like a complaint, just stating an observation that to me is kind of weird as I’ve never really seen it done with Flash before. I suppose it’s more kind of weird because we’ve been dealing with the future Flash for so long now it feels like ages since we’ve gotten a story with someone from the rogues gallery as the villain of the arc. Nonetheless, Flash has still maintained to be a readable and entertaining book, just hopefully the story won’t go on too much longer and drag on.
BATMAN ETERNAL #42
Written by SCOTT SNYDER, JAMES TYNION IV, RAY FAWKES, KYLE HIGGINS and TIM SEELEY
Art by JOE QUINONES
Cover by IVAN REIS and JOE PRADO
You’ve been waiting for the debut of Bluebird – and here it is, though this story may not have a happy ending!
My Thoughts: Fans will be excited to see the character of Bluebird back in action in the pages of a Batman book. But of course, there’s always a catch when people get something they want, don’t they, as the solicitation puts it. And with the series getting ready to close out in March ahead of Convergence, the stakes are only rising ever more in the series.
STORY / COVER: TODD MCFARLANE
ART: SZYMON KUDRANSKI
This HUGE, TRIPLE-SIZED 250th ANNIVERSARY ISSUE marks only the second time an independent comic book has reached such a lofty number! This issue marks the cataclysmic climax in the story of the current Spawn: Jim Downing’s final struggle against his costume while the fate of New York City lies in the balance. From the ashes of that battlefield comes the long awaited return of the original Spawn… AL SIMMONS. The celebration of this anniversary issue will feature covers from TODD MCFARLANE, GREG CAPULLO (Batman), SKOTTIE YOUNG (Rocket Raccoon), JOCK (Detective Comics), SEAN MURPHY (The Wake), and PHILIP TAN (Batman and Robin).
My Thoughts: I will have to admit up front that I do not read Spawn. I have nothing against him, just never been a reader of the series. I’ve seen the movie from the 90’s and enjoyed it, but that’s as far as my involvement with the character goes. That said, I do know how popular and beloved Spawn is, so seeing his book reach to 250 issues is definitely a feat to admire (and really to any book that gets to that milestone). Whatever feelings one may have for his creator, credit is due where it’s due.
PENNY DORA & THE WISHING BOX #3 (OF 5)
STORY: MICHAEL STOCK
ART / COVER: SINA GRACE
It was two days after Christmas, and Penny’s first thought was “If you can’t trust your best friend, who can you trust?” So she gave the Wishing Box to her best friend Elizabeth. Or…PRINCESS Elizabeth, as she was soon known in her kingdom of Southern California where she ruled over all the dragons and beasties and even Penny herself.
My Thoughts: I first heard of this book thanks to Danni Danger from Weird-Girls when she does her weekly videos on what she’s picking up at the comic shop. I instantly fell in love with the premise, basically a kid-friendly version/take on Pandora’s Box (written by an 8-year old long ago, now turned into a comic by her dad). The art not only serves the story greatly, but it matches up with the tone of it being for all-ages. If you have child, this would be great for them.
UNCANNY AVENGERS #1
RICK REMENDER (w) • DANIEL ACUñA (a/C)
COUNTER-EVOLUTIONARY PART 1
• From the ashes of AXIS an all-new, all different Avengers assemble!
• The tragedy at the end of AXIS has left the Uncanny Avengers vulnerable, and someone is taking advantage of it.
• One of the Avengers oldest foes returns with a terrible secret that will, all hyperbole aside, shatter the lives of two members of the squad.
• What is Counter-Earth? What terrible secrets does it house?
My Thoughts: After AXIS, this is the new Uncanny Avengers team we’re getting. I won’ lie: I now have some hesitation on how good it will be due to AXIS, which was also written by Rick Remender. AXIS wasn’t terrible, but it was disappointing, but that’s a story for another time. I just hope that the amazing job Rick did on the first volume of the series is what he will once create with this one. At least the art will be extremely beautiful thanks to Acuña.
STAR WARS #1
JASON AARON (W) • JOHN CASSADAY (A/C)
THE GREATEST SPACE ADVENTURE OF ALL TIME RETURNS TO MARVEL!
Luke Skywalker and the ragtag band of rebels fighting against the Galactic Empire are fresh off their biggest victory yet—the destruction of the massive battle station known as the Death Star. But the Empire’s not toppled yet! Join Luke along with Princess Leia, smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca, droids C-3PO and R2-D2 and the rest of the Rebel Alliance as they strike out for freedom against the evil forces of Darth Vader and his master, the Emperor. Written by Jason Aaron (Original Sin, Thor: God of Thunder) and with art by John Cassaday (Astonishing X-Men, Uncanny Avengers), this is the Star Wars saga as only Marvel Comics could make it!
My Thoughts: Star Wars is back at Marvel! I never read many books while the property was at Dark Horse; in fact, what I read was Legacy and another title that at the moment eludes me. It will be interesting to see how Marvel handles these titles once again and how many of the fans who read them while at Dark Horse return to read these as well. Marvel’s putting some of their top talent to tell great stories as the talent they have I feel safe to say they will execute very well.
NICK SPENCER (w) • RAMON ROSANAS (a)
Cover by Mark Brooks
• Scott Lang has never exactly been the world’s best super hero. Heck, most people don’t even think he’s been the best ANT-MAN — and the last guy invented Ultron and joined the Masters of Evil, so that’s saying something.
• But when the SUPERIOR IRON MAN calls with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Scott’s going to get a chance to turn it all around and be the hero he’s always dreamed of being.
• Sure he’s been to prison! Sure he’s been through a messy divorce! Sure he’s been, um… dead. But this time is different! This time nothing is gonna stop the astonishing ANT-MAN!
My Thoughts: Ant-Man gets an ongoing! I’d say just in time for the movie, but that comes out in the second half of 2015. Since the trailer for said movie is out after this is published, I’ll say: “just in time for the trailer’s release!” instead. Oh look! I just did. Nick Spencer has been sort-of hit and miss with some of the books I’ve read, but the hits were very good hits, and I’m definitely going to give this a chance. I say you should too.
CHARLES SOULE (W) • NICK BRADSHAW (A/C)
From the pages of DEATH OF WOLVERINE, THE LOGAN LEGACY and the WEAPON X PROGRAM!
Wolverine may be dead…but what will happen to his mortal remains, encased in something as rare and powerful as Adamantium? The battle for control of this valuable artifact has begun! But why does it matter so much… and why is a war brewing in Logan’s name? Death is on the books for a dozen heroes and villains, and Mystique is playing chess with them all, including X-23, Sabretooth, Daken, Lady Deathstrike and more! Murder, mutilation, betrayal and trauma…none will be spared!
My Thoughts: Marvel dives into its first foray of a weekly ongoing series. What better way of doing that than with the villains for a hero that not too long ago passed “to a better place”? Having the inverted Sabertooth paired up with Mystique, Lady Deathstrike, X-23 and Daken will, if anything, prove to be an interesting avenue to take. It was one thing feeling about how this book would be like before finding out Sabretooth’s fate before AXIS, but after? It sure changes the tone of it quite drastically and how the chemistry between him and the others will be like. And Marvel even got Ray Fawkes to write the series along side Charles Soule, as he’s also been working on one of DC’s many weekly series: Batman Eternal.
Coming in three weeks: February 2015 solicitations!
