It’s a month of crazy on both sides of this spectrum and there is no loser as we, the comic readers, pretty much come out the victors. June is a special month for DC as new Superman artist John Romita Jr. begins his run on the series. Lobo shows up again, this time in Justice League United as he goes man-o a man-o with Hawkguy while elsewhere we get treated to Batwoman’s and Red Robin’s origin. Lemire and Sorrentino decide to break Green Arrow and Batman gets ready to wrap up its year long Zero Year storyline with The Riddler! Meanwhile at Marvel, it’s an Original Sin overload as Original Sins tie-in mini series is introduced. The Hulk goes Savage while the New Avengers take on Marvel’s version of the Justice League. Miles Morales has a lot going on and a certain Black Cat is out for revenge.
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #2
Written by JEFF LEMIRE
Art and cover by MIKE McKONE
It’s all out battle issue as Hawkman has a showdown with Lobo as the League is teleported to Rann to face the shape-changing alien called Byth! This looks like a job for Supergirl!
My thoughts: What happened to “The Main Man”? This version looks like The Main Wannabe. This design is completely displeasing and I really hope Hawkman beats the ever living alien snot out of him. This isn’t The CW, DC! C’mon son!
SECRET ORIGINS #3
Written by ROBERT VENDITTI, MARC ANDREYKO and SCOTT LOBDELL
Art by MARTIN COCOLLO, TREVOR MCCARTHY and TYLER KIRKHAM
Cover by LEE BERMEJO
Green Lantern takes center stage this month in a tale by Robert Venditti and Martin Cocollo! And don’t miss the origin of Batwoman by Jeremy Haun and Trevor McCarthy, and Red Robin’s origin, courtesy of Scott Lobdell and Tyler Kirkham!
My thoughts: The issue with retelling Batman’s origin seems pointless when that’s what’s happening over on Batman, but I digress. This one, however, gives us other characters who makes more sense in getting their origin told, as I’d guess it’s been some time? Still, getting GL’s will be the most fun to read for me.
GREEN ARROW #32
Written by JEFF LEMIRE
Art and cover by ANDREA SORRENTINO
With Seattle under siege and Diggle in the grip of crime lord Richard Dragon, the Queen Legacy must find a way to move on. But is that even possible given the violent aftermath of The Outsiders War? A brand-new storyline and perfect jumping-on point to Lemire and Sorrentino’s popular run, as “Green Arrow: Broken” begins here!
My thoughts: Diggle became such a popular character on the TV show Arrow (being shirtless here and there didn’t hurt that, I’m sure…) that he was brought into the comics, same way with Harley Quinn. And just like the in the TV show, Diggle is in the thick of it and in really deep mess. But the big lead here is the arc’s title. That alone is enticing.

“THE MAN OF TOMORROW” chapter 1! A NEW ERA for SUPERMAN begins as Geoff Johns takes the reigns – and he’s joined by the legendary super-talent of John Romita, Jr. in his first-ever work for DC Comics as they introduce Ulysses, the Man of Tomorrow, into the Man of Steel’s life. This strange visitor shares many of Kal-El’s experiences, including having been rocketed from a world with no future. Prepare yourself for a run full of new heroes, new villains and new mysteries! Plus, Perry White offers Clark a chance to return to The Daily Planet!
My thoughts: The one good thing about Superman in The New 52 is right here. John Romita Jr. His art is fantastic and has been one of my favorites since I began paying attention to who draws what. I’m debating whether or not to look into this series as I have not been a fan of what’s been done to Supes in this new 52 world, mainly the… attitude adjustment DC has so decided to give him. But with JrJr’s art… it’s drawing… me in (see what I did there?).

The penultimate issue of ZERO YEAR is here! Batman gets one step closer to the endgame with The Riddler as the final chapter of ZERO YEAR: SAVAGE CITY draws closer to its stunning finale!
My thoughts: This year long story is almost over and thank goodness. While I am in no way bagging on the story, it just feels like this has been going on for longer than it should have. I guess another reason why I can’t wait for this to end is I really want to see Batman back in regular day and time and getting to read brand-new stories. Again, not hating on Zero Year whatsoever incase that wasn’t clear.
ORIGINAL SIN #3.1 (to 3.4)
MARK WAID (W)
MARK BAGLEY (A)
Cover by JG JONES
EVERYBODY HAS ONE…
My thoughts: So this solicitation (or lack thereof) is the same for all Original Sin point issues. This is only the second month of the event for Marvel and it already feels like we’re being overloaded with tie-ins. What happened to the way it was done last year? That was handled so much better. We have this, the main event, tie-ins in already existing series, and another series called Original Sins. Yeah! They just added and S. Three separate books with the same title (basically). That won’t be confusing at all.
SAVAGE HULK #1
ALAN DAVIS (W/A/C)
VARIANT by JOHN CASSADAY
Alan Davis writes and draws a blockbuster story pitting the HULK against… the X-MEN!?!?! Learn the startling secret of Professor Xavier’s connection to Bruce Banner! Guest starring the Leader and the Abomination!
My thoughts: Marvel’s success with the anthology Savage Wolverine is so well that now they’re doing it with the not-so-jolly jade giant. Hooray, I say! I’m really enjoying the idea of Marvel having anthology books with each arc being done by a different creative team. Keep it up, I say! Maybe they should try again having Marvel Comics Presents and see how it works out now.
NEW AVENGERS #19 & 20
JONATHAN HICKMAN (W) • VALERIO SCHITI (A)
Cover by DUSTIN WEAVER
ISSUE #19 –
• It’s the battle you didn’t know you wanted to see—until now! As the New Avengers take on the combined power of the Great Society—and only a single parallel Earth can survive!
ISSUE #20 –
• How far is Doctor Strange willing to go to protect the Earth from the Great Society? Too far…
My thoughts: If you’ve been reading New Avengers, you know that the main plot throughout the series has been this group (that shouldn’t be called New Avengers. Secret Avengers if anything…) has been dealing with incursions of other earths trying to collide with ours which would mean the end of everyone. If you haven’t been reading, well, now you know. In recently released issues, an alternate earth has a group that resembles some members of DC’s Justice League (one is even called Wayne). It was obviously not something that was shown lightly and I expected a big brawl coming out of the end of one the last issues. Glad we’re getting it. It’s going to be one hell of huge fight.
MILES MORALES: THE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #2
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) • DAVE MARQUEZ (A/C)
PART TWO OF THE BIGGEST SPIDER-MAN STORY OF THE YEAR “REVIVAL”
• After the mind-blowing reveal at the end of the first issue, miles life will NEVER be the same again.
• With SHIELD gone, the biggest villain in SPIDER-MAN history is out and nothing can stop him.
• Miles has made a huge choice about the woman he loves. Will he live to regret it?
My thoughts: If there’s one Bendis book you should read, hands down, it’s this one. Bendis is a very hit or miss writer, but lately he’s been hit after hit with the books he’s writing (the two X-books and this one). Ever since Bendis started writing Miles Morales with the last volume of Ultimate Spider-Man, every issue has been superb. No, seriously! Whatever notion people may have about the Ultimate Universe (and a lot are right), this book is the exception to the rule. Seriously… HUGE must read.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #3
DAN SLOTT (W) • HUMBERTO RAMOS (A/C)
• Because of her last encounter with Spider-Man, Felicia Hardy lost everything. Now the Black Cat is back, and she doesn’t want any apologies or excuses… just REVENGE.
• Plus: Spidey teams up with a real hero, fireman Pedro Olivera… who just happens to be the current boyfriend to one Mary Jane Watson.
• And… more on you-know-who from the opening scene back in ASM #1. You know who we’re talking about. Yeah, that’s right. You better not miss this one!
My thoughts: Peter is back and I am oh so happy!! I am super excited to see what happens between him and Felicia. It won’t be pretty or fun for Peter, but it’ll be a good read and fun for us! I can’t wait to see what the big deal about the opening scene of #1 is. We’ll find out later this month.
