Happy new year, Punchers! ’Tis a new year with more surprises in store for all in the coming months from both Marvel and DC. This year we’re starting off with another two-in-one special of both Marvel and DC highlights in one pack! Contain your excitement and save it for the comics to make sure you keep an ear to the ground to… or rather – an eye to the page in this case!
FOREVER EVIL #7
Written by GEOFF JOHNS
Art by DAVID FINCH and RICHARD FRIEND
Cover by DAVID FINCH
It’s evil versus evil in the shocking “take-no-prisoners” conclusion to FOREVER EVIL! What will be the fate of Lex Luthor and his Injustice League? Who will live – and who will die? And why is The Hooded Man the most feared being from the Syndicate’s world? Do not miss this startling finale that will leave the DC universe reeling and reveal the secrets to the future!
My thoughts: It’s the final issue of Forever Evil and for the most part the solicit is just the generic/stereotypical “who lives/dies/things-forever-change/shocking-finale/future-won’t-be-the-same” message we normally see at the end of events like this. That said, it will be interesting to see where the villains ends up at the end of all this and how that actually does affect the books going forward… for however long until the “next big thing.”
THE FLASH #29
Written by BRIAN BUCCELLATO
Art by PATRICK ZIRCHER
Cover by PASQUAL FERRY
The Flash faces the final battle against the Central City killer! But will we learn the truth behind the murder of Barry Allen’s mother? Only Deadman can help solve this mystery!
My thoughts: I really want to see what happens if and/or when Barry (or us as the readers) learn the truth of his mother’s murder in the New 52. I don’t think it will be much different than the original tale was, but this is the New 52 after all, and what’s the point of telling something again if not having some changes? I definitely can’t wait to see Deadman involved!!
SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #6
Written by CHARLES SOULE
Art and cover by TONY S. DANIEL and BATT
When the Phantom Zone is breached by Zod, Superman and Wonder Woman are forced to do the unthinkable to stop the tyrant from global destruction. But can they do what must be done – and will the world forgive them?
My thoughts: Does anyone else read the “do the unthinkable” part to the end and think neck-snapping? It just can’t be me, right? Is neck-snapping the new couple the thing to do? Thanks Zack Snyder and Whatever Goyer… (David S.)
BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #29
Written by GREGG HURWITZ
Art and cover by ETHAN VAN SCIVER
The savagery of Man-Bat reaches a horrifying peak this final issue of the series!
My thoughts: I’ve never read the series, but a final issue is a big thing as I’m sure this is someone’s favorite comic out there. Or at least one of the comics they look forward to reading each month and now they…. won’t be. But it sounds like it’ll go out with a bang (or screech) with Man-Bat.
Written by TIM SEELEY
Art by JORGE LUCAS
Cover by EMANUEL SIMEONI
Calvin Rose and Anya must defeat Lord Death Man, but there’s another master of death in the mix, the key to LDM’s plans: Dr. Darrk! Will Calvin Rose finally be resurrected, or will the Talon succumb to eternal Death?
My thoughts: We say good-bye to another series as Talon also sees its final issue printed and shipped in March. A new series with a new character that has become beloved by a lot of fans may be seeing his series come to an end, but we all know this won’t be his final appearance all together. Where and how will Talon go on after this if Calvin is resurrected or the door of his closes? We shall soon see. One way or another, Talon’s claws will grasp again. Sorry, couldn’t help myself.
And now flipping the page, it’s Marvel time.
MOON KNIGHT #1
WARREN ELLIS (W)
DECLAN SHALVEY (A/C)
Marc Spector is Moon Knight!…Or is he? It’s hard to tell these days, especially when New York’s wildest vigilante protects the street with two-fisted justice and three—that’s right, count ‘em—different personalities! But even with the mystical force of Khonshu fueling his crusade, how does the night’s greatest detective save a city that’s as twisted as he is? The road to victory is going to hurt. A lot. Marvel’s most mind-bending adventure begins NOW as Moon Knight sleuths his way to the rotten core of New York’s most bizarre mysteries!
My thoughts: This is so exciting! Warren Ellis writing Moon Knight?! Warren Ellis! Moon Knight! What else do you need to be sold on this brilliant pairing?! Oh March, you’re such a tease. Why can’t it be March right now? If this is a dream, I don’t ever want to wake up. Has my excitement sold you yet? C’MON SON!
SILVER SURFER #1
DAN SLOTT (W)
MICHAEL ALLRED (A/C)
The universe is big. Bigger than you could ever imagine. And the SILVER SURFER, the lone sentinel of the skyways, is about to discover that the best way to see it… is with someone else. Meet the Earth Girl who’s challenged the Surfer to go beyond the boundaries of the known Marvel U– into the strange, the new, and the utterly fantastic! Anywhere and Everywhere… Hang On! THE SILVER SURFER
My thoughts: So basically Dan Slott, along with Mike Allred, are making a Surfer series like their own version of Doctor Who. That. Is. BRILLIANT! It makes sense and works on so many levels! An exciting and new way to write the Surfer, something that he needs and fits nicely with his character, his nature, his type of world. And Allred making it all happen with his art? That is the cherry on top of the best sundae anyone could ever have. Seconds, please!!
WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #1 & 2
Jason Latour (W) • Mahmud Asrar (A/C)
WELCOME TO THE JEAN GREY SCHOOL OF HIGHER LEARNING! The ALL NEW MARVEL NOW smash hit series schools with Jason Latour (WINTER SOLDIER) and Mahmud Asrar (X-MEN) leading the charge with drama, action and homework(?)! World-famous X-Men Wolverine, Storm, and a star-studded faculty must educate the next generation all-powerful, but inexperienced mutants! But with their own lives steeped in deadly enemies and personal crises, how can the X-Men guide and educate—let alone defend—the school? At the Jean Grey School, you never know who will enroll…or who will lead the class! And what mysterious organization waits in the shadows to destroy Wolverine’s mutant sanctuary? These questions and more are answered in the All-New Marvel Now sure-to-be-smash, WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #1!
My thoughts: Wolverine and the X-Men fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The series comes back with a new volume and creative team! Sure, Jason Aaron and Nick Bradshaw aren’t on the book anymore, but that’s no reason to turn away. Latour has worked with Jason before (Wolverine Japan infinite comic, the upcoming Southern Bastards series) and is in regular talks with him with his ideas for the series which Jason himself has stated he loves and is jealous he didn’t think of them or gets to do them. It’s always better to give something a shot first before saying no. And Mahmud’s art looks amazing enough from the cover work alone.
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS & GERRY DUGGAN (W)
KEVIN NOWLAN & DAVID YARDIN (A)
Cover by KEVIN NOWLAN
A+X GOES OUT IN STYLE!
• Superstar BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS and comics legend KEVIN NOWLAN tell a scintillating tale of KITTY PRYDE + VISION!
• Gerry Duggan (DEADPOOL) and David Yardin (X-FACTOR) finish their rip-roaring CAPTAIN AMERICA+CYCLOPS story!
My thoughts: Marvel also has a series ending in March and sadly it’s A+X. I can’t remember a Marvel team up book that has lasted for more than two years in the last few attempts or so. I’m more saddened that there was only one Iceman story. Booo! Booo, I say! How about one more issue, Marvel? Iceman and Spider-Man team up! That’s all I want! Is that too much to ask for? #sadpanda
MATT FRACTION (W) • CHRIS ELIOPOLOUS (A)
Cover by DAVID AJA
• Who could forget that time when Clint Barton let his neighbor’s kids watched a holiday cartoon at his place?
• At long last THIS ISSUE is pretty much the cartoon they all watch. YOU’RE WELCOME.
• A very special holiday HAWKGUY that at long last lets legendary letterer CHRIS ELIOPOLOUS flex his astounding cartooning muscles in our pages. Matt and Matt do their regular jobs though. Maybe David will letter it? Probably not.
My thoughts: Hawkeye issues seem to be so rare these days that it’s like gathering gold. Once you got it, you’re rich! You’re rich! Except in this case it isn’t with dollars, but with really good storytelling and art. Pretty much the same, right? Chris Eliopolous is also a letterer besides an artist, but he’s a damn great artist (and letterer). And this issue, like the entire series has been, sounds awesome. This is a book I wish would be out twice a month. Maybe more.
