Your monthly insight for what books to keep an eye out is back again for comics shipping this May! An evil thought to be forever is done as the end of the future begins at DC in a new weekly series. Meanwhile, other new #1s pop up replacing old books and we say goodbye to another title leaving the New 52. Over at Marvel, their Original Sin is coming to light while an X-Men leaves the team to go space traveling (not again, amirite!) and Jim Starlin returns to a character he’s known for writing… none other than Thanos!
First and foremost: DC.
THE NEW 52 – FUTURES END #1
Written by KEITH GIFFEN, DAN JURGENS, BRIAN AZZARELLO and JEFF LEMIRE
Art by PATRICK ZIRCHER
Cover by RYAN SOOK
Five years from now, the DC Universe is reeling from a war with another Earth, leaving the world unprepared for an approaching evil that threatens to destroy the future. Can a time-traveling Batman Beyond help a massive cast of the DCU’s finest avert the impending apocalypse? Find out in this new weekly series that will forever alter the direction of The New 52! In this debut issue of The New 52’s weekly series, Batman Beyond arrives five years later! Grifter turns against humanity! And a Justice League member DIES!
My thoughts: Obviously this is in connection to DC’s 5 Years Later event/gimmick/whatever-you-want-to-call-it happening later this year, but I’m surprised it’s done on a weekly basis. How much story is there to really tell for this? Hopefully it’s not something that just drags out. And will it end by September or continue on after that?
SUPERMAN: DOOMED #1
Written by SCOTT LOBDELL with GREG PAK and CHARLES SOULE
Art and cover by KEN LASHLEY
Beginning the super-event you have been waiting for in The New 52: Superman vs. Doomsday in a way you’ve never seen before! And with Doomsday’s deadly new abilities, in this battle there can be no winners. The Man of Steel must unleash insane levels of power in order to do the job, only to terrify the world he’s saving. Beating Doomsday is only the beginning of this never ending battle!
My thoughts: Sigh. “In a way you’ve never seen before”… really? That alone right there makes me iffy about that because what’s really something that anyone has never seen in a fight? What’s Superman and Doomsday going to do to each other? Have a tickle fight? Chess game? Try to see who figures out the meaning of life before the other? It’s 42, by the way. And Superman “must unleash insane levels of power” to be able to defeat Doomsday (which we were already told there was no winner, so….)? I hope this doesn’t mean something so drastic and terrible that will make fans regret anything (coughmanofsteelmoviecough).
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #1
Written by JEFF LEMIRE
Art and cover by MIKE McKONE
In Canada, the team of Animal Man, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter and Stargirl is joined by Adam Strange to fight an unstoppable forced called the Unimaginable.
My thoughts: Haha! Canada, really? Seriously… Canada? What’s to protect? Moose crossings? Ok, all joking aside (seriously, I heart you, Canada), this is a weird team assortment, kind of like a random picking of heroes and thrown together. Sweet art, though. Mike McKone has always been a great artist.

“SUPERMAN: DOOMED” continues as Superman continues to change. Plus, Lois’s psi powers spike again as we see the looming shadow of Brainiac!
My thoughts: Lois with powers is something that’s just too idiotic for me. It’s like having MJ Watson as a monster. Both unpleasing concepts. What happened to you, DC? All these changes… it only seems to get worse. Oh, to have the good ol’ days again.
THE MOVEMENT #12
Written by GAIL SIMONE
Art by FREDDIE WILLIAMS II
Cover by STEVEN SEGOVIA
There’s no length the Movement won’t go to if it means rescuing one of their own from a cult that has deep roots in Burden’s hometown.
My thoughts: Fan-favorite Gail Simone bids good-bye to her series as DC cancels it with #12. This is a series I’ve never read, nor know anything about, but with a Gail book, there are bound to be plenty of sad folks out there.
It’s Marvel-ous time:
ORIGINAL SIN #1 (of 8)
Jason Aaron (W) • Mike Deodato (A)
Cover by Julian Totino Tedesco
WHAT DID HE SEE?
My thoughts: Not much to go on from here, but Original Sin is about someone killing the Watcher and having his eyes stolen. Being as the Watcher “sees all” of what happens on Earth, that poses a big threat to lots of people in the Marvel U. It actually sounds like an interesting story and hopefully proves to be as such. Jason Aaron is writing the event and he’s proven himself to be an excellent writer, so all is in good hands. I love Mike Deodato’s art so this just looks like a win-win for me. Hopefully others, too.
GREG RUCKA (W) • RUSSELL DAUTERMAN (A)
Cover by ALEXANDER LOZANO
Cyclops just discovered that the father he thought died long ago is alive and well and A SPACE PIRATE. Spinning directly out of ALL-NEW X-MEN, comes the first ongoing solo series for one of the time-traveling Original X-Men. After the events of “Trial of Jean Grey”, Scott Summers stays in space to learn some valuable lessons from his dad: 1) How to shave, 2) How to talk to girls, 3) How to steal a Badoon space-ship.
My thoughts: Currently in All-New X-Men, the original X-crew are in space rescuing Jean. With the rescue, they meet up with the Starjammers where young Cyclops is (sort of) again reunited with his father. Oh time-travel! And even with that story still going (1 chapter left) we already know that an outcome is Cykes leaving to be with his father. The X-Men go to rescue one of their own, but still come back one team-mate less. I’ve hope this turns out to be enjoyable, not because it’s an X-book, but Greg Rucka is a great writer. In Rucka I trust.
ALL-NEW DOOP #2 (of 5)
PETER MILLIGAN (W)
DAVID LAFUENTE (A)
Cover by MIKE ALLRED
• Doop takes Kitty Pryde for the trip of her life!
• See the treasures DOOPSPACE has to offer!
My thoughts: Doop is the best thing to ever happen, and made more awesomely so thanks to Jason Aaron in his run on Wolverine and the X-Men. It’s a shame this is only a mini-series because I would LOVE a Doop ongoing with each issue showcasing his whacky loveliness.
NEW AVENGERS #18
JONATHAN HICKMAN (W) • VALERIO SCHITI (A)
Cover by DUSTIN WEAVER
• In all of creation, only one Earth has successfully met and triumphed over each Incursion that has threatened it: the Earth of the heroes of the Great Society!
• Guess which Earth is on a collision course with ours?
My thoughts: Earth incursions is something the New Avengers have been dealing with since the very first issue. It’s been an interesting storyline, but one I’m surprised is still going on. Regardless, it’ll be intriguing to see how the Avengers smarties deal with this. I mean, we all know their Earth will win, but how and how much damage will it create?
THANOS ANNUAL #1
JIM STARLIN (W) • RON LIM (A)
Cover by DALE KEOWN
• Jim Starlin returns to Thanos, and he’s brought INFINITY GAUNTLET artist Ron Lim with him!
• Thanos must face Mephisto, his future self, the Avengers and more!
• Learn how a devastating defeat in Thanos’ past set events into motion that will redefine the Marvel Universe in the near future!
• A prequel to the upcoming THANOS: THE INFINITY REVELATION original graphic novel!
My thoughts: Reunited and Starlin and Lim must feel so good! Thanos has always been one of the biggest imposing villains ever created in the Marvel Universe. Having him fight Mephisto, his own future self (!!!), and everyone else in just one annual… that’s a lot packaged into 40 pages! Bring it on, Jim! Show us what you got!
