My Thoughts, Solicited: October 2014 Solicitations

Screen Shot 2014-07-11 at 4.42.27 PM

As I continue to tinker around with this, trying to make it better for everyone, be excited for more expansion into other comic companies! Have a little fun with some magic in Cloaks and exploration of alternate realities with Multiversity! And while it’s time to head back to school with some creepiness factor added in, let us all also remember our fallen friend, who will likely be back in time for the Apocalypse movie (or not, depending on the so-called feud between Fox and Marvel), Wolverine….

 Cloaks

CLOAKS #2 (of 4)
Author: Caleb Monroe
Artist: Mariano Navarro
Cover Artists: W. Scott Forbes
After the shocking reveal of what truly happened to his mentor and father figure Blackstone, Adam reluctantly agrees to join the ranks of the CLOAKS black-ops organization and is immediately thrown into his first mission: hunting down his predecessor on the team, someone who Adam can’t help but find familiar…

Company: Boom! Studios

My thoughts: The first issue was off to an interesting start. Magic, street magic, mixed with Bond-type mission that has to be done now is not your normal type of mix, but it’s working so far. Plus the art by Navarro is so well done, especially more so with the amazing coloring done. I’m sad it’s a four issue mini. Would’ve loved to have this as an ongoing series to get more of the characters than we’re going to get.

Multiversity

THE MULTIVERSITY: THE JUST #1
Written by GRANT MORRISON
Art and cover by BEN OLIVER
The next chapter of the greatest adventure in DC’s history is here!
When they last collaborated, Grant Morrison joined artist Ben Oliver (LOBO, BATMAN/SUPERMAN) for the acclaimed ACTION COMICS #0. For their next team-up, the two superstars take a spin around the self-obsessed Earth-16 – a.k.a. Earth-Me!
With all of the world’s threats having been handled long ago by their parents, the next generation of supers – including Chris Kent, Damien Wayne, Alexis Luthor, Offspring, Megamorpho, Donna Troy and more – find themselves labeled as superstars more often than super heroes. But with that fame comes complacency, and when a massive threat unlike anything they’ve ever seen surfaces, this pampered crew finds themselves in way over their head. What secret is Damien keeping from Chris that could tear the world’s finest friends apart? Who is the mysterious killer lurking behind the scenes among these spoiled super-children? And what chance do they stand against the monstrous villain that’s murdering its way cross the Multiverse? All that and more in this exciting stand-alone issue which also acts as chapter three of the MULTIVERSITY saga. Join us, if your dare, for THE MULTIVERSITY!

Company: DC Comics

My thoughts: Multiversity’s been a comic literally years in the making. Once it was officially announced to be coming out starting in August, it was a comic lots of comic book readers were eager to get their hands on. And although there are those out there that were confused some by the debut issue, I enjoyed it nonetheless. I’m looking forward to the other worlds from the multiverse that will be explored throughout this series and this issue will be no different.

Gotham Academy

GOTHAM ACADEMY #1
Written by BECKY CLOONAN and BRENDEN FLETCHER
Art and cover by KARL KERSCHL
WELCOME TO GOTHAM ACADEMY! Gotham City’s most prestigious prep school is a very weird place. It’s got a spooky campus, oddball teachers, and rich benefactors always dropping by…like that weirdo Bruce Wayne. But nothing is as strange is the students!
Like, what’s up with Olive Silverlock? Is she crazy or what? Where did she go last summer? And what’s the deal with her creepy mom? And how come that Freshman MAPS is always following her around? And is she still going out with Kyle? P.S. Did you hear the rumor about the ghost in the North Hall?!
GOTHAM ACADEMY is a new, monthly teen drama set in the shadow of Batman and the craziness of Gotham City, with new characters and old plus a secret tie to Gotham’s past…

Company: DC Comics

My thoughts: I definitely have a fond for comic books… let’s say “out of the ordinary” that take place in school settings. Wolverine & The X-Men, Avengers Academy (R.I.P.), The Woods- just to name a few examples. So when I see this book comes along, looking all awesome with the cool cover art and all, I just can’t help myself and put it on my list to definitely need to read. This could be another book from DC for me to read, seeing as how DC’s list for me is ever so short. Impress me, DC. I really want to like this. It has all the cool things I like.

 Deathstroke

DEATHSTROKE #1
Written by TONY S. DANIEL
Art by TONY S. DANIEL and SANDU FLOREA
Cover by TONY S. DANIEL
The DCU’s deadliest assassin stars in his own ongoing series by writer/artist Tony S. Daniel! See him as never before in this explosive new series, with one surprise after another as we see Slade Wilson in the fight of his life!

Company: DC Comics

My thoughts: Everyone’s favorite stabby-stab assassin man is back in his own solo book. Deathstroke was never really a character I got into as much as other people. That’s not saying I don’t like him, just that I don’t go out of my way for stories with him like I do with others. Still, he’s definitely someone to absolutely not mess with (especially if you fought him in Batman: Arkham Origins!), so when there’s a story where he’s in the fight of his life, it’s gotta be big, right?

 Southern Bastards

SOUTHERN BASTARDS #5
story: JASON AARON
art / cover: JASON LATOUR
The hit southern crime series returns, as JASON AARON (Scalped, Thor: God of Thunder) and JASON LATOUR (Wolverine & The X-Men, Loose Ends) pull back the curtain on the history of Craw County and its most famous and feared resident. In a place where only bastards flourish, what does it take to be the biggest, meanest, most powerful bastard of them all? Only Coach Boss knows. And if I was you, I wouldn’t ask him.

Company: Image

My thoughts: Jason Aaron is a writer I very much enjoy reading stories by. Just about everything I’ve read from him I have liked, so seeing the news originally long ago that he was starting this book, I was all set to check it out. It’s been a great treat right from the start. The other Jason, Mr. Latour, who’s also writing the current volume of Wolverine and The X-Men for Marvel, draws the book perfectly. His style of art is a hand-in-hand match up for the southern, oh-$#!%, scary-movie type story Aaron has cooked up for the series. It’s kind of like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Walking Tall movie, just with a much older (and white) protagonist and a much more messed up town. It’s great!

 Wicked And The Divine

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #5
story: KIERON GILLEN
art / cover: JAMIE MCKELVIE & MATT WILSON
Showtime.

Company: Image

My thoughts: If you’ve been reading this series, then you know that “Showtime” is all you need to get you going and excited for what’s to come. If you haven’t been reading this series, I just have one question for you: Why do hate great things? Why? Is it because Rob Liefeld? OK, that was more than one question (and a cheap shot at Liefeld, but it was in jest!). Anyway, Kieron and Jamie are seriously a powerhouse duo and the story they have here with the people being gods and the crazy world… it’s hard not to be amazed. If you loved their work on Young Avengers (please tell me you read that at least?!), then there’s no reason not to check this out. Unless you’re a kid, which in that case, I’m pretty sure Spongebob is on. I love Spongebob.

RICK REMENDER (W) • ADAM KUBERT (A)
Cover by JIM CHEUNG
ACT I: THE RED SUPREMACY
• The Red Skull has exploited the gifts of the world’s greatest telepath to broadcast pure hatred across the globe. Now, born of the murder of Charles Xavier, World War Hate has begun.
• Tony Stark discovers a secret truth that will upend not only his life, but also the lives of everyone he cares for.
• Can The Avengers and X-Men finally unite? Would their combined strength be enough to hold back the darkness of the Red Onslaught?
• Magneto murdered the wrong man, releasing the greatest evil the Marvel Universe has ever known. Now Rogue and Scarlet Witch are all that stand in its way.

Axis2

AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #2 (OF 9)
RICK REMENDER (W) • ADAM KUBERT (A)
Cover by JIM CHEUNG
ACT I: THE RED SUPREMACY
• The heroes of the Marvel Universe storm the beaches of Red Skull’s Genoshian Reeducation camps. What they discover within will lead to a bleak new era.
• The revelation of Tony Stark’s dark secret promises to shatter the fragile alliance between A and X.
• The all-new Captain America pays a terrible price.
• Nova’s attempt at solving the crisis leads to disaster.
• Magneto betrays his alliance to join an army of evil.

Axis3

AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #3 (OF 9)
RICK REMENDER (W) • LEINIL FRANCIS YU (A)
Cover by JIM CHEUNG
ACT I: THE RED SUPREMACY
• With the heroes lost, the world’s fate lies in the hands of the vilest syndicate known to man.
• Scarlet Witch is forced to join Dr. Doom, the man who unleashed her power to cause M-Day, or she will watch those she loves most die.
• The return of one of the Marvel Universe’s great villains!
• An Avenger quits, a heart is broken, and the world as we know it is gone.

Company: Marvel

My thoughts: AXIS IS JUST AROUNT THE CORNER, YA’LL! I am so pumped for this event! Rick Remender is a superb writer and has just been nailing it with Uncanny Avengers, which is what set everything up for AXIS with its opening arc. It was bad enough for the Marvel world having Onslaught around long ago. It was bad enough having Red Skull around. Now they have to deal with Onslaught + Red Skull + Red Skull with Xavier’s powers?! Mother ——————….

Death of Wolverine

DEATH OF WOLVERINE: THE LOGAN LEGACY #1 (OF 7)
CHARLES SOULE (W) • OLIVER NOME (A/C)
• Wolverine—the greatest X-Men ever—is dead!
• With this mutant powerhouse now permanently out of the picture, various factions of both good and evil are scrambling to fill the void left by Logan’s death!
• Will Wolverine’s Legacy be shaped by heroes who valiantly fought alongside him …or by those villains treacherous enough to have challenged him over the many years of his long life?
• The answers will be revealed in this special 7-issue limited series that spins directly out of the mega-popular DEATH OF WOLVERINE!
• This series will feature unique solo adventures of several instrumental figures in shaping Logan’s Legacy: X-23, Sabretooth, Daken, Lady Deathstrike and Mystique!

Company: Marvel

My thoughts: And the ‘aftermath’ of Wolverine’s death begins here! By the time this issue is out, Wolverine will have already bit the dust in DEATH OF WOLVERINE (which, at the time of this writing/publishing, will have had two issues out). Now begins how the rest of everyone who knew Wolverine in any shape or form will be affected by a world without Logan. This seven issue mini series will have each issue exploring a different character most closely tied to Wolverine, as they’re named in the solicitation. Let’s see what Legacy will be left in the wake of Logan’s death.

Guardians 3000

GUARDIANS 3000 #1
DAN ABNETT (w) • GERARDO SANDOVAL (a/C)
• Dive right into the action as the original Guardians of the Galaxy—Vance Astro, Yondu, Martinex, Starhawk and Charlie-27–try to save the future universe from the menace of the Badoon.
• But what happens when the Guardians discover something behind the Badoon…something even worse than they could have ever imagined?
• The very future itself is in danger, and the only possibility of salvation relies on the shoulders of this ragtag, bombastic group of underdogs. Thrown together by fate and fighting against intolerable oppression, how can they even hope to survive the first issue?!

Company: Marvel

My thoughts: Originally meant to start in September, the original Guardians of the Galaxy are back! Yes, the original. The group in this series were the very first Guardians when they were created back in the 70s. With the popularity of the movie (which is awesome, everyone better have seen it!), Marvel of course is doing everything they can to keep the popularity and love going, which as we can see includes the OG team. I’ve never read anything with them, so this will be a first for me just like lots of other readers.

Amazing SpiderMan

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #7
DAN SLOTT (W) • GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI (A/C)
• Peer over the EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE!
• Spidey teams up with Ms. Marvel in a high-flying (stepping in Kamala’s case) adventure!
• Who is Spider-UK and what does he have to do with SPIDER-VERSE?

Company: Marvel

My thoughts: I’ve said on a-many different occasions that Ms. Marvel is one of Marvel’s current greatest creation. Her book is a fantastic read every issue, one of the many reasons being that she is a fun and exciting character with so much charm that you can’t help but love her. Now she’s teaming up with Spider-Man! I think I may go into happiness overload here. But you know what? It’ll be worth it. And if that wasn’t enough to get you to read this book, we’re also getting a Spider-Verse lead up story tie-in with a brand new Spider-Man creation! A Spidey that works for the Britain corps! If I keep grinning, people will think I’m the Joker!
