According to MMAjunkie, Showtime is looking to re-enter the world of Mixed Martial Arts and they have their sights set on Invicta FC. Back in January of this year, not long after being purchased by Zuffa, Strikeforce was folded into the UFC leaving Showtime without an MMA product. Showtime Sports Executive Vice President and General Manager Stephen Espinoza expressed interest in finding a new MMA promotion and that MMA promotion could very well end up being Invcita Fighting Championships!
Since entering the MMA market back in April 2012, Invicta FC has produced five events, with a sixth one on the way. With Invicta FC 5, they made their first foray into the Pay-Per-View market after only offering their events via online streaming. While I absolutely love being able to watch Invicta FC for free online, I recognize and appreciate what an important opportunity being featured on Showtime would be. It would definitely be an important push for Invicta and Women’s Mixed Martial Arts as a whole.
While Espinoza had many flattering things to say Invicta FC, Showtime has not yet committed to the idea. Still, Invicta FC gaining a television deal would tremendously elevate the status of Women’s Mixed Martial Arts and hopefully help female fighters gain the level of respect that they deserve. Not to mention, if Invicta FC were to team up with Showtime it’s possible that Invicta FC could even be featured on network television, given Showtime‘s relationship with CBS. I realize that I’m getting ahead of myself but the potential is so very exciting.
In the meantime, Invicta FC is preparing for their next event on July 13th. Invicta will be broadcast on PPV once again, with Invicta FC 6. Cris “Cyborg” Justino (Formerly Santos) will be challenging Marloes Coenen for the second time, this time for Invicta’s Featherwieght title!
